Cymatic Shapes

Each piece is crafted from a 12" x 12" sheet metal plate, made of either aluminum or electro-galvanized steel, both being corrosion-resistant. The overall dimensions, including the frame, measure 14 3/4" x 14 3/4", and each piece weighs approximately 3 lbs.

The metal plate is coated with black gloss paint for a sleek, polished finish. The plate is then affixed to a vibration generator and white sand is applied to the plate. Through a technique of tuning the vibratory frequency, mesmerizing “standing wave” formations occur in the sand. The sand formation is then secured to the metal plate with an invisible polyurethane spray for a smooth, vibrant and permanent fixture.

The display frame is constructed from premium, Italian-made "floater frame" moulding, providing an elegant and refined presentation. We enhance the frame in-house, incorporating 1/8" clear tempered glass, ensuring that it’s shatter-resistant and safe for display.

FAQ

Cymatic Shapes

NO, each Cymatic Shapes art piece, is unique, hand made and can not be exactly replicated.

Cymatics is the study of how sound effects physical matter, or the study of visible sound and
vibration.

It's sand on a metal plate. The plate is placed on a vibration machine, where as, at certain
frequencies the sand moves around to create these patterns because of the standing wave
formations of the metal plate. In other words, the sand will move away from the area of the plate
that is vibrating and collect at areas of less vibration.

No. The sand is fixed to the plate.

No. The shapes are a combination of multiple variable conditions such as: plate size and
shape, plate thickness, and what material the plate is made from. For example, a 12" x 12"
square plate of 1/16" aluminum will create a certain shape at 1,000Hz, but by changing any size
variable of the plate you'll get a different shape when using the same frequency, 1,000HZ.

All of the different shapes formed in this cymatic experiment are known as Chladni Figures
because they're named after the German physisist that discovered them, Ernst Chladni. (1756 -
1827)
